INDIANAPOLIS

Indianapolis is the capital and largest city of Indiana, United States, with around 901,000 people and more than two million in the wider metropolitan area. The city was established in 1821 as a purpose-built state capital near the geographic centre of Indiana and became the seat of state government in 1825. Indianapolis later developed into an important railway, manufacturing and transportation centre, while today its downtown is centred on Monument Circle and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Other major sights include the Indiana Statehouse, White River State Park and several museums, while the nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the separate municipality of Speedway hosts the Indianapolis 500, one of the world’s most famous motor races. Indianapolis also has a notable underground doom metal tradition. The Gates of Slumber formed here in 1998 and became one of the best-known American traditional doom bands of the 2000s, while Apostle of Solitude followed in 2004 and helped continue the city’s association with the genre.
