Inferno was a heavy metal bar in Shanghai, China, which permanently closed in November 2022 after eleven years in operation.
Inferno opened on 6 May 2011 at 480 Yongjia Road, founded by Danish metal fan Martin Aamodt. One of China’s first dedicated heavy metal bars, it became a gathering place for Shanghai’s metal community, attracting both Chinese and international regulars. The original bar was relatively small, with a pool table, horror films playing on television screens and a soundtrack covering everything from traditional heavy metal and thrash to death and black metal. Following complaints from neighbours, Inferno relocated to East Longhua Road in 2015, where it expanded into a larger venue with a concert stage. The second location hosted Chinese underground bands as well as international touring acts, becoming an important part of Shanghai’s live metal scene. In 2018, Inferno moved again, this time to 462 Changle Road in the United Valley complex. The third incarnation returned to the original pub concept, occupying two small rooms with a combined capacity of approximately 30 people. The interior featured framed concert posters, metal memorabilia and a portrait of Lemmy from Motörhead behind the bar. Cassandra Chen, who had been involved with Inferno for much of its existence, took over the operation after Aamodt’s departure. The bar continued hosting metal-themed evenings and gatherings until financial difficulties and repeated closures during the COVID-19 pandemic brought its eleven-year history to an end.
