Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol, Austria, an Alpine city of about 132,000 people set in the Inn Valley between the Nordkette mountains and the central Alps. Founded in the 12th century and formally established as a town in 1237, it became an important Habsburg centre thanks to its position on the trade route between Italy and Germany. The compact Old Town is known for the Golden Roof, medieval lanes and mountain views almost straight from the streets, while highlights include the Imperial Palace, Hofkirche, Ambras Castle and the Bergisel ski jump. Innsbruck is also famous as a winter-sports city, having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and it works year-round for hiking, skiing and cable-car trips into the Nordkette. Getting in and around is straightforward via Innsbruck Airport, the main railway station and local trams and buses, with the city centre easy to explore on foot.
