Jessheim is a town and the administrative centre of Ullensaker municipality in Akershus, Norway, with around 25,500 people. Located approximately 45 kilometres northeast of Oslo, the modern town developed around Jessheim railway station, which opened in 1854 as part of Norway’s first railway line between Oslo and Eidsvoll. Its expansion accelerated considerably following the opening of Oslo Airport at Gardermoen in 1998, and Jessheim was officially granted town status in 2012. Today it serves as the main commercial and cultural centre of Upper Romerike, with Jessheim Storsenter, Ullensaker Kulturhus and a compact town centre surrounding the railway station. Just west of Jessheim lies Raknehaugen, Northern Europe’s largest prehistoric burial mound, constructed around AD 550 using an enormous timber framework. Jessheim also has a connection to Norwegian black metal through Dimmu Borgir, whose vocalist and founding member Shagrath was born here. The band is closely associated with the area and has become one of Norway’s most internationally successful extreme metal acts.
