Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri, United States, with around 521,000 people and a metropolitan area that extends across the state line into Kansas. The modern city developed from a Missouri River trading settlement and was incorporated in 1850, later becoming an important railway, livestock and commercial centre for the American Midwest. Kansas City is particularly known for its distinctive barbecue tradition, more than 200 fountains and an important jazz scene that flourished during the 1920s and 1930s, especially around the 18th & Vine district. Major sights include the National WWI Museum and Memorial, Union Station, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the American Jazz Museum. The city covers a large area, with entertainment districts such as Power & Light, Westport and the Crossroads Arts District spread beyond the traditional downtown. Kansas City also serves as the centre of a metropolitan region of more than two million people, so many venues and attractions listed under Kansas City may actually be located across the state line in Kansas.
