KOŠICE

Košice is Slovakia’s second-largest city, with about 225,000 people, set on the Hornád River in the eastern part of the country. First mentioned in 1230 as Villa Cassa, it grew into one of the most important medieval towns in the Kingdom of Hungary and later became the main urban centre of eastern Slovakia. The compact historic core runs along Hlavná ulica, a long central street lined with cafés, bars, churches and old town houses, with the Gothic St Elisabeth Cathedral as the city’s main landmark. Other key sights include the State Theatre, St Michael’s Chapel, the Singing Fountain, the Lower Gate archaeological site and the East Slovak Museum, while the city also works as a base for trips to Slovak Paradise National Park and the Tokaj wine region. Getting in and around is straightforward via Košice International Airport, the main railway station, trams and local buses.
