KUTNÁ HORA

Kutná Hora is a historic Bohemian town of about 22,000 people, founded in the 12th–13th centuries and famed for the medieval silver mines that once bankrolled the Czech crown. Just east of Prague, it’s best known for two UNESCO-listed showstoppers: the Gothic St Barbara’s Church, built by wealthy miners, and the Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr), a former royal mint and residence that underscores the town’s old economic power. Another headline stop is the Sedlec Ossuary—an ornate bone chapel in the suburb of Sedlec—alongside the nearby Cathedral of the Assumption. The centre is compact and walkable with steep lanes, viewpoints and atmospheric courtyards, making Kutná Hora an easy day trip by train from Prague or a rewarding overnight if you want the old town quieter in the evening.
