Key visitor stops include the historic Upper City around Saint Sophia, the Lavra’s monastery caves and viewpoints, and the central streets leading from Khreshchatyk to Maidan Nezalezhnosti. Getting around is straightforward on the Kyiv Metro, which opened in 1960, with most central areas easy to cover on foot between stations.
