KYIV

Kyiv is Ukraine’s capital and largest city, a Dnipro River metropolis of around 3 million people (pre-war estimates), officially marked as founded in 482 and long regarded as one of the historic centres of Kyivan Rus’. The city is best known for its golden-domed skyline and major heritage landmarks, including the UNESCO-listed Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, while everyday Kyiv mixes grand avenues and parks with riverside promenades and neighbourhood café life. Key visitor stops include the historic Upper City around Saint Sophia, the Lavra’s monastery caves and viewpoints, and the central streets leading from Khreshchatyk to Maidan Nezalezhnosti. Getting around is straightforward on the Kyiv Metro, which opened in 1960, with most central areas easy to cover on foot between stations.
