Llandeilo is a small market town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, with around 1,800 people. The settlement developed beside the River Towy and takes its name from Saint Teilo, an important Welsh saint associated with the area in the early medieval period. Its compact centre is known for colourful historic buildings, independent shops and a strong Welsh cultural identity, while Llandeilo railway station lies on the scenic Heart of Wales Line. Immediately beside the town is Dinefwr, one of the most historically important estates in Wales, with an 800-acre park, Newton House and the ruins of 12th-century Dinefwr Castle. The castle was a major stronghold of the medieval Kingdom of Deheubarth and was closely associated with Lord Rhys, one of the most powerful Welsh rulers of the period. Llandeilo also sits close to the western edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, making it a useful base for exploring the Towy Valley and the surrounding countryside.
