Ljubljana is Slovenia’s capital, a compact river city of about 295,000 people with roots in the Roman town of Emona and a modern identity shaped by architect Jože Plečnik. The walkable centre follows the Ljubljanica River past bridges and café terraces to the hilltop Ljubljana Castle, while highlights include the Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, the Central Market and the riverside old town lanes. Green space is built into daily life with Tivoli Park and a car-light core, and the city makes an easy base for day trips to Lake Bled, Postojna Cave and the Karst. Getting in and around is straightforward via Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) and direct rail and bus links across Slovenia and into Austria, Italy and Croatia.
