Lubiąż Abbey, or Opactwo Cysterskie w Lubiążu, is a former Cistercian monastery in Lower Silesia in south-western Poland, about 54 kilometres north-west of Wrocław. Founded in 1175 and dissolved in 1810, it developed into one of the most important monastic centres in Silesia. The vast complex is famous for its monumental scale, with a main façade measuring 223 metres, and the abbey church itself grew out of an earlier medieval structure before taking on its later Gothic and Baroque form. After war damage, plundering and decades of neglect, large parts of the complex fell into disrepair, which helps explain why the church interior today can look far more stripped-back and atmospheric than the abbey’s better-known ceremonial halls.
Behemoth used the church section of Lubiąż Abbey as the setting for the video for “Lvciferaeon”. In that context, the abbey’s towering interior, bare floor, worn walls and monumental architectural scale give the video a ritualistic and theatrical atmosphere that suits the band’s visual style. Because the church is part of a much larger monastic complex, it can be easy to miss this specific section when comparing it with the more polished and frequently photographed state rooms elsewhere in the abbey.
Dimmu Borgir also used Lubiąż Abbey for the video for “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel”. Seen in that setting, the location comes across as immense, austere and almost cathedral-like, with the height of the nave and the emptiness of the space giving the performance a grand and solemn backdrop. The choice of Lubiąż Abbey works especially well for Dimmu Borgir because it combines scale, decay and historical weight without looking like a complete ruin.
