Lublin is a historic city in eastern Poland with a population of about 328,000 (end of 2024), first mentioned in medieval sources in the late 12th century and granted city rights in 1317. It’s best known for its atmospheric Old Town gates and lanes, the hilltop Lublin Castle complex, and the city’s distinctive “Lublin Renaissance” architecture. A classic first loop takes in Kraków Gate and Grodzka Gate, the cobbled Old Town around Rynek, and the castle courtyard, where the Holy Trinity Chapel is famous for its 15th-century Rutheno-Byzantine frescoes—one of the city’s standout sights. Beyond the centre, Lublin has a strong student and cultural energy thanks to its universities, with festivals and nightlife concentrated around the old streets and modern café districts. Getting in and around is straightforward via the main rail routes and Lublin Airport (LUZ), located about 10 km east of the centre.
