Makati is a highly urbanised city in Metro Manila, the Philippines, with about 310,000 people after recent boundary changes. Originally established as San Pedro de Macati in 1670 and converted into a city in 1995, it is now best known as the Philippines’ main business and finance district, with banks, offices, malls, hotels and nightlife packed into a dense urban core. Key areas include Ayala Center, Greenbelt, Glorietta, Legazpi Village, Salcedo Village and Poblacion, while sights such as Ayala Museum, the old Guadalupe Church and the city’s pocket parks give it more than just a corporate feel. Makati also has one of Manila’s strongest bar, restaurant and live-night scenes, especially around Poblacion and the central business district. Getting in and around is straightforward via the MRT, buses, taxis and ride-hailing, with Ninoy Aquino International Airport close by, though traffic can be heavy across Metro Manila.
