Marseille is France’s second-largest city, a Mediterranean port of about 886,000 people with roots going back to around 600 BC, when Greek settlers from Phocaea founded Massalia. It is often described as France’s oldest city, and its identity is built around the sea, migration, trade and a rough-edged southern character. The Vieux-Port remains the classic starting point, with Le Panier’s old streets just above it and Notre-Dame de la Garde watching over the city from the hilltop. Other key sights include the modern MuCEM, Fort Saint-Jean, La Major cathedral and boat trips to the Château d’If and Frioul Islands. Marseille is also a gateway to the Calanques, the limestone coves and cliffs stretching towards Cassis, while the city itself has a strong food, football and live-music culture. Getting in and around is straightforward via Marseille Saint-Charles station, Marseille Provence Airport and the metro, tram and bus network.
