MEXICO

Mexico’s heavy metal story began in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and hard rock acts started reaching Mexican audiences through imported records and underground radio. Early local pioneers such as Luzbel, Cristal y Acero, and Transmetal laid the foundations for a domestic metal identity, blending traditional heavy metal with Latin musical influences and Spanish-language lyrics.

By the late 1980s and 1990s, Mexico had developed one of Latin America’s most passionate and loyal metal fanbases. Thrash and death metal exploded in popularity, with bands like Cenotaph, Shub Niggurath, and R’lyeh gaining cult status in the extreme metal underground. The scene became known for its intense live shows, often in small venues or DIY festivals, where fans expressed themselves with uncompromising energy.

International acts, from Iron Maiden to Metallica, have long considered Mexico a highlight of their tours due to the crowd’s unmatched enthusiasm. The famous “¡Olé!” chants and coordinated mosh pits have become a hallmark of the Mexican metal experience.

Today, the country boasts major festivals such as Hell and Heaven Metal Fest and Mexico Metal Fest, which bring together the biggest global names alongside a thriving national scene.
