PACHUCA DE SOTO

Pachuca de Soto is the capital of the Mexican state of Hidalgo, with around 314,000 people in the municipality and more than 600,000 in the wider metropolitan area. The city has deep mining roots, with silver extraction becoming especially important from the 16th century onward and shaping Pachuca for several centuries. During the 19th century, miners and engineers from Cornwall in England arrived to work in the region, leaving an unusual British influence still visible in local culture. They introduced football, helping establish Pachuca as one of the birthplaces of the sport in Mexico, as well as the Cornish pasty, locally known as a paste. The city’s main landmark is the Monumental Clock in Plaza Independencia, completed in 1910, while former mining districts and nearby towns such as Real del Monte preserve much of the region’s industrial heritage. Pachuca lies roughly 90 kilometres northeast of Mexico City and is also known as La Bella Airosa because of the strong winds that regularly sweep through the city.
