Mexico City is a high-altitude megacity of roughly 9 million people (over 21 million in the metro area), founded by the Mexica in 1325 as Tenochtitlan and refounded by the Spanish in 1521. Its UNESCO-listed Historic Centre fans out from the Zócalo with the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor ruins and the Palacio de Bellas Artes, while Chapultepec Park packs a castle, major museums and lakes. Neighbourhoods such as Roma and Condesa bring leafy streets, cafés and venues; Coyoacán centres Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul and colonial squares; Polanco lines up galleries, restaurants and bars; and Xochimilco’s canals offer colourful weekend trajinera rides. Expect a standout food scene from taco stands and traditional markets (La Merced, San Juan) to contemporary dining. Getting around is straightforward via the extensive Metro and Metrobús networks, with international access through Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and the newer Felipe Ángeles (NLU).
