Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin, USA, with about 560,000 people and a wider metro area of more than 1.5 million. Established as a city in 1846, it grew as a Great Lakes port and manufacturing centre, shaped especially by German immigration, brewing, industry and its position on Lake Michigan. Today Milwaukee is best known for beer history, motorcycles, summer festivals, lakefront neighbourhoods and a strong music and bar culture. Key sights include the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Harley-Davidson Museum, the Historic Third Ward, the RiverWalk, the old brewery districts and the lakefront parks around Bradford Beach and Veterans Park. Getting in and around is straightforward via Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, Amtrak’s Hiawatha service to Chicago, local buses and The Hop streetcar in the central area.
