Montreal is the largest city in Quebec, the second-largest in Canada, and the ninth-largest in North America. Founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, or “City of Mary,” it later took its name from Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill at the heart of the early settlement. Today, the city is centred on the Island of Montreal and surrounded by a handful of smaller islands, the largest being Île Bizard. Blending history with modern energy, Montreal is known for its cultural diversity, vibrant neighbourhoods and unique mix of French and English influences.
