Muhos is a small municipality and local centre in North Ostrobothnia, Finland, with about 9,000 people, set on the Oulujoki River around 35 km southeast of Oulu. Founded as a municipality in 1865, it is shaped by the river valley between the open Ostrobothnian plains and the forested hills toward Kainuu. The area is known for Oulujoki’s old trade and travel routes, former salmon fishing and rapids culture, later hydropower history, and easy access to nature. Key sights include Muhos Church, one of Finland’s oldest wooden churches still in regular use, the Oulujoki riverside, Liimanninkoski nature trail and nearby Rokua Geopark landscapes. Getting in and around is straightforward by road or regional rail from Oulu, though a car is useful for reaching the nature areas and smaller villages around the municipality.
