Næstved is a regional city in southern Zealand, Denmark, with about 85,000 people in the municipality and medieval roots as a trading and monastery town on the Suså River. The settlement grew strongly from the 1100s, gained market rights in 1140 and became one of Zealand’s important medieval towns before later developing through harbour trade, paper, ceramics and industry. Today Næstved is best known as South Zealand’s main urban centre, with a compact historic core, shops, cafés and cultural venues, plus landmarks such as St Peter’s Church, St Martin’s Church, Helligåndshuset and the riverside areas around Suså. Nearby sights include Herlufsholm, Gavnø Castle and the coastal area around Karrebæksminde, making the city a practical base between inland Zealand and the south coast. Getting in and around is straightforward by rail, bus and road, with links toward Copenhagen, Ringsted, Vordingborg and the rest of southern Zealand.
