NICE

Nice is a Mediterranean city on the French Riviera in southeastern France, with about 350,000 people in the city and close to 1 million in the wider metropolitan area. Founded by Greek settlers as Nikaia around the 4th century BC, it later developed under Roman, Savoyard and French influence, giving the city a layered identity between Provence, Italy and the Alps. Nice is best known for the Promenade des Anglais, its pebble beaches, Belle Époque hotels and the colourful old town, Vieux Nice, with narrow lanes, markets and baroque churches. Key sights include Castle Hill for views over the bay, Place Masséna, Cours Saleya market, the Matisse Museum and the Chagall Museum, while the wider Côte d’Azur makes easy day trips to Monaco, Antibes, Cannes and hill towns above the coast. Getting in and around is straightforward via Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, the main railway station and the city’s tram network, with most central areas easy to explore on foot.
