Nummirock is an annual metal festival held at Nummijärvi in Kauhajoki, Finland. Taking place around the Finnish Midsummer holiday in June, it is one of Finland’s longest-running rock and metal festivals and has been strongly focused on metal since 2002.
The festival is organised by Nummijärven Maatalousjärjestö ry, a local association whose involvement in Midsummer events at Nummijärvi goes back long before the Nummirock name was introduced. The roots of the event lie in local Midsummer celebrations, which were gradually transformed from dance and popular entertainment into a rock festival during the 1980s.
The name Nummirock was adopted in 1987. That year’s programme included Dr. Feelgood, Girlschool, Eppu Normaali, Peer Günt and other rock and popular music acts. During the 1990s, the festival grew into one of Finland’s larger summer music events, with rock and heavy metal taking an increasingly prominent role.
Major rock and metal acts appeared during this period. Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Sepultura and Helloween played in 1996, followed by Megadeth in 1997 and Pantera and Slayer in 1998. The 1999 edition featured Scorpions, Danzig, Motörhead and Dismember.
From 2002 onwards, Nummirock became a dedicated metal festival. Later editions have featured bands such as Obituary, Dissection, Kreator, Marduk, Behemoth, Meshuggah, Arch Enemy, Napalm Death, Satyricon, Watain, Amon Amarth, Fear Factory, Amorphis, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Finntroll, Ensiferum and numerous Finnish metal bands.
The location at Nummijärvi lake is central to the character of the festival. The festival grounds and camping areas lie beside the water, around 25 kilometres from central Kauhajoki. Camping has become an important part of Nummirock’s identity, with tents, cars, caravans and motorhomes forming a temporary Midsummer metal village around the site.
Modern editions use several stages around the lakeside area, together with bars, food stalls, merchandise stands and festival services. Swimming in Nummijärvi is possible from the festival area, giving Nummirock a setting that combines heavy metal, camping and the Finnish Midsummer landscape.
The festival remains closely tied to the local community that originally created the Nummijärvi Midsummer celebrations. Revenue from the early events helped support local projects, and the same community-based organisational tradition has continued through the later rock and metal eras.
In 2026, Nummirock was held for the 40th time under the Nummirock name and attracted around 18,000 visitors over four days. Its long development from rural Midsummer celebration to lakeside metal festival gives Nummirock a distinctive place in Finnish festival history.
