NUREMBERG

Nuremberg is Franconia’s largest city, a Pegnitz-side hub of roughly 525,000–530,000 people with medieval roots (first recorded in 1050) and a skyline crowned by the Imperial Castle. Its compact centre runs from half-timbered streets and market squares to major museums, with highlights including the Kaiserburg, Albrecht Dürer’s house and, in winter, the famous Christkindlesmarkt—one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets. The city also confronts its 20th-century history at the Documentation Center on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds and at the Palace of Justice’s Memorium Nuremberg Trials. Getting in and around is easy via the ICE rail hub and Albrecht Dürer Airport, linked to the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes on U2.
