Obscene Extreme, commonly abbreviated OEF, is an annual extreme music festival held at Na Bojišti in Trutnov, Czech Republic. Founded in 1999 by Miloslav “Čurby” Urbanec, it is centred on grindcore, death metal, goregrind, crust punk, hardcore and other fast, brutal and underground styles.
The first Obscene Extreme was originally intended as a one-off celebration of Urbanec’s 25th birthday. He had already been involved in the extreme music underground through concerts, tours, fanzines and his Obscene Productions label, and was inspired by festivals such as Germany’s Fuck the Commerce. The first edition brought nearly 40 bands to Trutnov, and the response from bands and audience turned the birthday party into an annual festival.
Na Bojišti has remained the main home of Obscene Extreme since the beginning, apart from a temporary move to Svojšice in 2009. The Trutnov site is an outdoor amphitheatre and festival area on the edge of town, giving the festival a fixed setting closely associated with its history.
Obscene Extreme uses a single-stage format, so bands play one after another without overlapping concerts elsewhere on the site. This keeps the whole audience focused on the same stage and helps create the intense, communal atmosphere for which the festival is known.
Stage diving is one of the most visible parts of OEF culture. Audience members are allowed onto the front section of the stage before jumping back into the crowd, while organisers maintain rules to keep the performance area moving. Costumes, freak-show elements, absurd audience participation and the festival’s deliberately chaotic sense of humour have also become part of the event.
The musical programme remains heavily focused on underground extremity. Bands that have played Obscene Extreme include Napalm Death, Sodom, Obituary, Suffocation, Immolation, Possessed, Vader, Terrorizer, Incantation, Asphyx, Brujeria, Krisiun, Municipal Waste, Eyehategod, Nuclear Assault, Dismember, Repulsion, Brutal Truth, Massacre, Discharge and hundreds of lesser-known bands from around the world.
By the end of 2025, Obscene Extreme had recorded 1,225 bands across its festival history. The festival has also staged international editions in places such as Australia, Asia and the Americas, although Trutnov remains its main home.
Several principles have stayed central to Obscene Extreme since its early years. Only vegetarian and vegan food is sold inside the festival grounds, reflecting Urbanec’s animal-rights views. The festival also operates without conventional commercial sponsors or public grants, relying mainly on ticket and merchandise income.
Charitable fundraising has been part of Obscene Extreme since 2012, with donations going to Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders. By 2026, the festival had donated almost two million Czech koruna to the organisation.
