Palma is the capital and largest city of the Balearic Islands, Spain, with around 435,000 people. Located on the southwestern coast of Mallorca, it was founded by the Romans in 123 BC and later became an important Mediterranean trading centre under Muslim rule, when it was known as Madina Mayurqa. The city was conquered by James I of Aragon in 1229, beginning a new period of Christian rule. Its historic centre is dominated by the enormous Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria, commonly known as La Seu, and the neighbouring Royal Palace of La Almudaina. Other notable sights include the circular 14th-century Bellver Castle, the old Arab Baths and the narrow streets of the medieval quarter, while Santa Catalina is particularly known for its restaurants, bars and nightlife. Palma also has an interesting place in Spanish extreme metal history. Death metal pioneers Unbounded Terror formed here in 1991 and released their debut album, “Nest of Affliction”, in 1992, one of the earliest Spanish death metal full-lengths. The related doom/death metal band Golgotha was formed in Palma the same year.
