Peru’s heavy metal history began in the early 1980s, with bands like Tarkus and Pax helping to introduce hard rock and heavy sounds to local audiences. The underground scene took shape mid-decade, led by pioneers such as Mortem, whose death/black metal style gained an international cult following, and Hadez, who became known for their raw and aggressive sound.
In the 1990s, the scene diversified despite political instability and limited access to venues. Black metal acts like Anal Vomit and Goat Semen emerged, later earning global recognition for their uncompromising, extreme style. Traditional and power metal also found a foothold with bands such as Armagedon and Blizzard Hunter.
Lima remains the centre of the Peruvian metal scene, hosting both underground club gigs and major concerts by international acts.
