Peterborough is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, England, with about 215,000 people in the wider local authority area. Its roots go back to an Anglo-Saxon monastery founded in the 7th century, and the city is best known for Peterborough Cathedral, one of England’s great medieval churches and the burial place of Catherine of Aragon. The city grew as a railway and industrial centre in the 19th century, then expanded rapidly as a New Town from the 1960s onwards, giving it a mix of historic core, modern suburbs and strong transport links. Key sights include the cathedral precinct, the museum, the riverside Embankment, Ferry Meadows in Nene Park and the Bronze Age archaeological site at Flag Fen. Getting in and around is straightforward via Peterborough railway station on the East Coast Main Line, with fast trains to London, Cambridge, Leeds and Edinburgh, plus road access via the A1.
