PETROȘANI

Petroșani is a small city in Hunedoara County, Romania, with around 30,000 people, set in the Jiu Valley between the Retezat and Parâng mountains. The settlement grew from rural origins into one of Romania’s most important coal-mining centres during the 19th and 20th centuries, and its identity is still closely tied to mining, workers’ culture and the wider industrial history of the valley. Today Petroșani works as a practical mountain base as much as a former mining town, with quick access to Parâng for skiing, hiking and viewpoints, and Retezat National Park within reach for more serious mountain trips. The centre is compact, with cafés, local shops and the University of Petroșani, while the surrounding valley towns add a strong post-industrial atmosphere. Getting in is straightforward by road or rail through the Jiu Valley, with connections toward Deva, Târgu Jiu and the Transylvanian interior.
