Porsgrunn is a riverside city in Telemark, Norway, with about 37,000 people in the municipality, set where the Telemark waterway meets the Frierfjord in the Grenland region. It gained market-town status in 1807 and later grew into an important shipping, industry and manufacturing centre, closely tied to the wider industrial belt around Skien, Bamble and Herøya. The city is best known as Norway’s “porcelain city”, with Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik founded in 1885 and still central to local identity. Key sights include the Porselensmuseet, the riverside promenade, DuVerden Maritime Museum and Science Centre, the church and cultural spaces around the centre, and nearby Brevik for small-town coastal atmosphere and trips into the Langesundsfjord archipelago. Getting in and around is straightforward by train, bus and road, with links to Skien, Larvik, Oslo and the rest of Telemark.
