PORTUGAL

Portugal’s heavy metal roots took hold in the early 1980s, influenced by the global rise of NWOBHM and the hard rock scene. One of the earliest and most influential Portuguese metal bands was Tarântula (founded in 1981), who became pioneers of traditional heavy metal in the country. The 1980s also saw the birth of the speed/thrash movement with bands like V12 and Ibéria, helping establish a small but passionate fan base.

The 1990s marked a turning point as Portuguese metal gained international recognition, especially through the gothic metal wave led by Moonspell. Formed in 1992, Moonspell became the country’s most famous metal export, blending black metal roots with gothic and dark atmospheric elements, and achieving worldwide success with albums like Wolfheart (1995) and Irreligious (1996).

Alongside Moonspell, bands like Heavenwood and ThanatoSchizo brought melodic death and progressive elements into the Portuguese scene, while the underground thrived with black and death metal acts such as Corpus Christii, Decayed, and Grog.

Today, Portugal hosts several respected festivals, including Vagos Metal Fest and Milagre Metaleiro, attracting both local talent and major international acts.
