Purcellville is a small town in Loudoun County, Virginia, with around 8,900 people. The area was first settled in the 18th century and became known as Purcellville in 1852, before being formally incorporated as a town in 1908. Its growth was closely tied to transportation: the Washington and Ohio Railroad reached Purcellville in 1874, helping turn the settlement into the main commercial centre of western Loudoun County. The railway closed in 1968, but its former route now forms part of the Washington & Old Dominion Trail, a popular long-distance cycling and walking route that ends in Purcellville. The town retains a compact historic centre with late-19th- and early-20th-century buildings, restaurants and small shops, while the surrounding countryside is known for farms, vineyards, breweries and views towards the Blue Ridge Mountains. Purcellville lies about 80 kilometres northwest of Washington, D.C., making it a convenient base for exploring western Loudoun and northern Virginia.
