Rhodes is the capital and largest city of Rhodes island in Greece, with about 50,000 people in the city and more than 115,000 in the wider municipality. Founded in 408 BC at the island’s northern tip, it grew into one of the great maritime cities of the ancient Greek world and was later shaped by Roman, Byzantine, Knights Hospitaller, Ottoman and Italian rule. The city is best known for its UNESCO-listed Medieval Town, one of the best-preserved fortified old towns in Europe, with the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, old gates, mosques and harbour walls forming the historic core. Rhodes is also linked to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, though the statue no longer exists. The modern city adds beaches, hotels, restaurants and nightlife around Mandraki Harbour and the northern tip of the island. Getting in and around is straightforward via Rhodes International Airport, ferries from the main port, local buses and walkable streets inside the old town.
