ROTTERDAM

Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ second city, a North Sea port of about 660,000 people (metro 2.4 million) that grew from a 13th-century dam on the Rotte and was largely rebuilt after 1940—today it’s famed for bold, modern architecture and Europe’s busiest harbour. Highlights span the swan-necked Erasmus Bridge, the panoramic Euromast, the market-hall-meets-mural at Markthal and the quirky Cube Houses, while maritime history threads through the quays and the Port of Rotterdam. For older streets, wander historic Delfshaven; for galleries, bars and venues, criss-cross the centre by tram, metro or watertaxi. Getting in and around is easy via Rotterdam Centraal and nearby Rotterdam The Hague Airport, with frequent trains to Amsterdam and Schiphol and fast links across the Randstad.
