San Antonio is a major city in Texas, USA, with about 1.5 million people, founded in 1718 as a Spanish mission and presidio settlement. It is best known for the Alamo, the River Walk and its deep Tejano, Mexican-American and Spanish colonial heritage. The historic core centres on the old missions, with the Alamo and the other San Antonio Missions recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while downtown adds riverside restaurants, bars, museums and old plazas. Other key areas include Pearl for food and markets, Southtown for galleries and nightlife, and the King William Historic District for 19th-century houses. Getting in and around is straightforward via San Antonio International Airport, local buses and road links across central and south Texas, with Austin about 1½ hours away by car.
