Scarborough is a North Yorkshire seaside resort town of around 61,700 people (2021 census), founded around a Viking-era settlement and developed into Britain’s first modern seaside resort after the discovery of a natural spa in 1626. Set on the North Sea, it’s best known for its twin bays divided by the headland crowned with Scarborough Castle, plus the Victorian seafront, promenade and amusements. Highlights include the castle viewpoints, the South Bay harbour, the Rotunda Museum (one of the world’s oldest purpose-built museums), and Peasholm Park’s Japanese-style gardens, with coastal walks along the Cleveland Way and quick trips to the North York Moors. Getting in is straightforward via direct trains from York and connections onward to Leeds and London, and the compact centre is walkable once you arrive.
