School Bar is a small live music venue located at No. 53 Wudaoying Hutong in the Dongcheng district of Beijing, China. Opened in 2010 by local musicians, it became an important part of the city’s underground music scene, particularly for punk, indie rock and alternative rock, although metal bands have also performed there.
The venue occupies an old building with a distinctly worn appearance. Three smashed electric guitars hang above the entrance sign, surrounded by crumbling brickwork, exposed wiring and a weathered façade. The interior is equally rough, with walls almost entirely covered in concert posters, stickers, graffiti and handwritten messages accumulated over the years. The small stage is squeezed into a corner along one wall, leaving little separation between the performers and the audience. A staircase leads to an upper gallery overlooking the main room, allowing concerts to be watched from above. With a capacity of approximately 150 to 200 people, School Bar has hosted numerous local and international underground bands since opening, maintaining its reputation as one of Beijing’s longstanding independent music venues.
