Scottsdale is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, immediately east of Phoenix, with around 243,000 people. The modern community began in 1888 when U.S. Army chaplain Winfield Scott purchased farmland in the Salt River Valley, and Scottsdale was incorporated as a town in 1951 with only about 2,000 residents. It subsequently grew into one of the largest cities in the Phoenix metropolitan area, stretching north from the urban centre into the Sonoran Desert and McDowell Mountains. Old Town Scottsdale is the historic and entertainment centre, with restaurants, bars, shops and a large concentration of art galleries, while the nearly 48-square-mile McDowell Sonoran Preserve protects extensive desert landscapes and hiking trails. One of the city’s most important landmarks is Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and architectural studio, begun in 1938 and now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Scottsdale is also known for golf, resorts and its strong association with Southwestern and Western culture.
