Sliema is a dense coastal town in northeastern Malta with around 23,000 residents, set on a peninsula between Marsamxett Harbour and St Julian’s. Once a small fishing village and later a 19th-century summer resort for wealthier Valletta families, it is now one of Malta’s busiest shopping, hotel and seafront areas. The town is best known for its long promenade, rocky swimming spots, harbour views across to Valletta, and the busy Ferries area, where boats run across the harbour and around the coast. Sliema has a more modern, built-up feel than Malta’s older walled towns, with restaurants, bars, apartments and shops packed close together, while nearby St Julian’s adds more nightlife within easy walking distance. Getting around is straightforward by bus, ferry or taxi, with Valletta just across the water and Malta International Airport about 20–30 minutes away by road, depending on traffic.
