Iron Maiden‘s bassist and founder, Steve Harris, grew up at 40 Steele Road in East London. This was where his grandmother, Ada, lived and where Steve was born, in the back room, on 12 March 1956. It was a mid-terrace house on a quiet street, with a bay window on the ground floor. One common explanation for why Steve Harris lived with his grandmother has been divorce, but Steve Harris’ sister Linda has denied this in a post on Facebook.

Steve Harris would rehearse with his early band, Influence (later known as Gypsy’s Kiss), in the apartment during the band’s early days, and later Iron Maiden. This is also the address Steve Harris used in the BBC contract in 1979 for a recording session. The house can also be seen in the intro shown at the concerts during the Run for Your Lives tour in 2025 and 2026.

On the front wall of the building is a kind of Greco-Roman-style face, shared with the neighbouring property.
