Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg, a city of about 635,000 people (metro 2.8+ million) first recorded in the 10th century and best known for its role as the heartland of German car culture. It’s the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, with two of the country’s standout museums, and it sits in a bowl of hills and vineyards that give the city its distinctive terraces, stairways and viewpoints. The compact centre runs from Schlossplatz and the shopping streets to cultural anchors like the Staatsgalerie and the Opera, while green escapes include the Schlossgarten parks and the Wilhelma zoo and botanical gardens. Stuttgart is also famous for its wine culture and seasonal festivals, especially Cannstatter Volksfest and the Christmas market. Getting in and around is straightforward via Stuttgart Airport (STR), a dense S-Bahn/U-Bahn network, and fast rail links through Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof.
