THE DARKTHRONE TOMBSTONES

The Darkthrone Tombstones are two almost identical gravestones standing side by side in the churchyard at Oppegård Church in Svartskog, Norway. They are located behind the church and are relatively easy to identify, as both have a distinctive top section resembling a handle that sets them apart from the surrounding gravestones. Their significance comes from their connection to Darkthrone and the photographs taken for the band’s second album, “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” (1992).

Darkthrone used the gravestones during a photo session with Zephyrous in the period leading up to the album’s release. On the front cover of “A Blaze in the Northern Sky”, part of one of the gravestones can be seen in the foreground, with Zephyrous holding on to it. The photograph was rotated 90 degrees clockwise, creating the illusion that his hair is streaming out behind him, making him appear to be running or floating through the air. In reality, he was leaning backwards while holding on to the gravestone. Another photograph from the same session was used on the cover of “The Wind of 666 Black Hearts” (2016), a compilation of Darkthrone’s early rehearsal recordings. This image provides a clearer view of the gravestone, while additional photographs included in the artwork show both monuments and their distinctive shapes.
