THE METAL FEST

The Metal Fest Ecuador was a heavy metal festival held at the Explanada del Parque Bicentenario in Quito, Ecuador. It was the Ecuadorian edition of The Metal Fest, a festival originally established in Santiago, Chile, in 2012. Promoter CKConcerts brought the concept to Ecuador with the aim of creating a large-scale metal festival in Quito, combining international touring bands with representatives of the Ecuadorian scene.

The first Ecuadorian edition took place on 21 April 2023. It was originally scheduled for the Ágora de la Casa de la Cultura, but strong ticket demand led the organisers to move it to the larger Parque Bicentenario, on the grounds of Quito’s former international airport. The lineup featured Kreator, Testament, Accept, Apocalyptica, Stratovarius, Benediction, Grave Digger and Finntroll, together with Ecuadorian bands Total Death and Killme. The festival also included stalls selling records, tapes, shirts, patches and other metal merchandise.

The second and final edition took place on 18 and 19 April 2024, expanding The Metal Fest Ecuador into a two-day event. Emperor and Anthrax closed the respective days, while the programme also included Killswitch Engage, Gamma Ray, Sepultura, Exodus, Possessed, Soen, Within Temptation, Overkill, Death Angel, Biohazard, Amorphis and Dark Tranquillity. Ecuadorian and regional acts included Descomunal, Notoken, Lost in Darkness and Legion.

The festival used an outdoor production at Parque Bicentenario, with a large stage, video screens, food and drink areas and metal merchandise stands. Its two editions brought an unusually large concentration of international metal bands to Quito, especially within thrash metal, death metal, heavy metal, power metal, folk metal and symphonic metal.

The Metal Fest Ecuador did not continue after 2024, while the original Chilean festival carried on in Santiago. Its short run nevertheless made it one of the more ambitious metal festival projects staged in Ecuador.
