TINTERN ABBEY

Tintern Abbey was founded on 9 May 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. It is situated adjacent to the village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, which at this location forms the border between Monmouthshire in Wales and Gloucestershire in England. It was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales, and only the second in Britain (after Waverley Abbey).

In 1988 Iron Maiden recorded the music video for “Can I Play With Madness” at Tintern Abbey and Chislehurst Caves. The video was directed by Julian Doyle, and features Monty Python’s Graham Chapman; this would be one of his last appearances on television before his death in October 1989 of cancer. In the video, Chapman plays an irritable art instructor who criticizes a young student for including Iron Maiden’s mascot Eddie in his sketch of the abbey ruins.
