TROMSØ

Tromsø is the largest city in Northern Norway, with about 80,000 people in the municipality, set on Tromsøya and the surrounding islands and mainland at nearly 70 degrees north. The area has much older roots, but Tromsø became a chartered town in 1794 and later grew into an Arctic trading, fishing, research and expedition centre, often nicknamed the “Gateway to the Arctic.” Today it is best known for the northern lights, midnight sun, polar history, student life and its dramatic setting between fjords, mountains and sea. Key sights include the Arctic Cathedral, the Polar Museum, Polaria, Tromsø Cathedral, the harbour area and the Fjellheisen cable car up to Storsteinen for views over the city and surrounding peaks. Tromsø also has a lively bar, café and music scene for a city of its size, helped by the university and year-round tourism. Getting in and around is straightforward via Tromsø Airport, local buses, taxis and coastal ships, with the compact centre easy to explore on foot.
