Ukraine’s heavy metal scene began to emerge in the late Soviet era of the 1980s, when bands operated under strict censorship but still managed to cultivate a dedicated underground following.
In the 1990s and 2000s, the country developed a diverse metal landscape, from death and thrash metal to folk and symphonic black metal.
The political unrest and war with Russia in recent years have deeply influenced the Ukrainian metal community, with many bands addressing themes of resilience, national identity, and conflict.
Despite challenges, Ukraine continues to make a mark on the global metal stage, with bands like Jinjer, Ignea, and 1914, touring internationally and contributing to the rich tapestry of Eastern European heavy metal.
