Umeå is the largest city in northern Sweden and the capital of Västerbotten County, located on the Ume River near the Gulf of Bothnia. With a population of around 135,000, it is a university city known for its youthful atmosphere, cultural scene and strong ties to music. Umeå gained recognition as the European Capital of Culture in 2014 and remains one of Sweden’s most active hubs for rock and metal, with several venues and festivals contributing to its reputation as the “City of Birches.”
