VANCOUVER (USA)

Vancouver is a Columbia River city of about 199,000 people (2024 estimate) in southwest Washington, founded in 1825 around Fort Vancouver and incorporated in 1857. Sitting directly across the river from Portland, it’s best known for its Pacific Northwest “river-and-mountains” setting, its deep frontier history at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, and a revived waterfront district built for walks, food and sunset views. Highlights include exploring the fort and military barracks area, strolling the Columbia River waterfront promenade, and using the city as a practical base for day trips into the Columbia River Gorge or up toward Mount St. Helens. Getting in and around is straightforward via Portland International Airport (PDX) just over the river, with I-5 linking the metro and plenty of local buses for cross-town hops.
