Vega is a live music venue in Copenhagen, Denmark. Located on Enghavevej in Vesterbro, it opened as a concert venue in September 1996 and has become one of the city’s main stages for contemporary music.
The venue has three concert rooms. Store Vega is the largest, with a standing capacity of 1,550. Lille Vega holds 500, while Ideal Bar has room for 200. Together they allow the venue to present everything from small club shows to larger international touring acts.
The programme is broad, covering rock, metal, punk, pop, hip-hop, electronic music, jazz, singer-songwriters and experimental music. Hundreds of concerts take place at Vega each year, with both Danish and international artists appearing across the three rooms.
The building was originally Folkets Hus, a meeting and cultural centre for the Danish labour movement. Folkets Hus remained connected to the labour movement until the early 1990s. After the organisation left, the future of the building was uncertain, and plans were made to turn it into a supermarket. The building was instead listed for preservation in 1994, before being renovated and reopened as Vega during Copenhagen’s year as European City of Culture in 1996.
Much of the original functionalist interior remains. Dark wooden wall panels, mahogany floors, chandeliers, balconies and winding staircases give Vega a warmer and more architectural character than many modern concert halls. The building is a major part of the venue’s appeal, not just a shell around the stages.
VEGA operates as a foundation and is designated as a Regional Venue in Copenhagen. Store Vega is used for larger names, while Lille Vega and Ideal Bar give space to smaller acts, developing artists and more specialised bookings.
Rock and metal have been part of Vega’s programme since the 1990s. Bands that have played the venue include Slayer, Motörhead, Megadeth, Mastodon, Machine Head, Opeth, Kreator, Paradise Lost, Monster Magnet, Baroness, Clutch, High on Fire, Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan.
The three-room setup gives heavy bands different ways into the building. International metal acts can fill Store Vega, while Lille Vega and Ideal Bar suit smaller rock, punk, hardcore and underground metal shows.
