VIBORG

Viborg is one of Denmark’s oldest cities, located in central Jutland, with around 42,000 people in the city and about 98,000 in Viborg Municipality. The settlement developed around the year 1000 and became an important religious and political centre, serving as an episcopal seat from 1060. Its best-known landmark is Viborg Cathedral, while the surrounding old quarter includes cobbled streets, historic houses and Sct. Mogens Gade, one of the city’s most distinctive streets. Viborg also played an important role in the Danish Reformation, particularly through the preacher Hans Tausen, and has long been associated with the historic Hærvejen route through Jutland. The city lies between the lakes Nørresø and Søndersø and has a compact centre that is easy to explore on foot. Viborg also has a small but established metal scene, with Viborg Metal Festival held in the city since 2014 and attracting both Danish bands and international acts.
